As infertility has become a widespread problem, more and more people are relying on the medical technique called In Vitro Fertilization or IVF. Couples tend to plan pregnancy at a late age, which is probably the biggest reason of infertility, along with high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. When a couple decides to go for an IVF treatment, they should be poised for hard times ahead. Knowing a few things about IVF before beginning with the process can help them be prepared for the outcomes. Here are some things you should know about IVF treatment before you take the plunge:
Success Rate of IVF : There are several factors which determine the success rate of IVF success, which may vary from couple to couple. These factors include age, lifestyle and the cause of infertility of a particular couple. As a general rule, those under 30 years have 50% chances of success, while for people over 40, the chances may fall dramatically to 20%. However, things are looking up as there has been great improvement in technology.
Fertility Drop in Women : As a woman reaches the age of 35 years, her fertility stars declining at a rapid rate, both in terms of number of eggs as well as their quality. A blood test called AMH can be conducted to find out about the number of eggs produced in a woman, though it does not disclose much about their quality.
Reduced Fertility in Men : Just like women, men too experience a drop in fertility rate as they age. Though men continue producing sperm, the quality of sperm deteriorates as they step into the forties and it can result in problems related to infertility. Also, sperms from older men lack in motility, quantity and are prone to DNA damage, which can lead to birth defects in the offspring.
It is better to take quick action : Couples should not wait too long to seek help in case they suspect infertility. Those who are under 35 should see a specialist if they fail to conceive within 12 months of trying, while those over 35 should do so only after 6 months.
IVF costs high on financial and emotional factors : The process of IVF is not only taxing on pocket but also takes its toll on the physical and emotional health. It can cause symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings and headaches, not to mention the stress she has to bear while waiting for the outcome of the process.
It is better to freeze your eggs at a younger age : Women should have their eggs frozen before crossing the age of 35 years and use them for their first and subsequent pregnancies as these eggs give them better chances of success of IVF.
Timing of IVF Treatment : Proper timing of the treatment in accordance with the woman’s cycle plays a key role in the success of the IVF process. Also, a test for pregnancy should be conducted only two weeks after the embryo’s transfer to the womb.
Risks involved in IVF Treatment : Though IVF is regarded as a safe process, about 1% of the patients are susceptible to being affected by a condition called Ovulation Hyperstimulation Syndrome. It means that a woman produced too many eggs after the hormone treatment. However, use of low drug doses has minimized the risk.
Success is not guaranteed : Though IVF has revolutionized the fertility treatments, it still gives no guarantees as many other unexpected problems may come in the way of its success. Such couples who have encountered failure in repeated attempts may finally have to settle without success. Counseling may help them cope with reality.
It is possible to complete the entire family with a single cycle : Innovation in medical science has made it possible for couples to complete the entire family with a single cycle. They can do so by having the first child in a cycle and have the embryos frozen for subsequent pregnancies, to be used at later stages. Overall, it is now possible to know whether IVF is meant for a couple or not, as they may come to know in a few attempts only whether they are likely to ever see a positive outcome.
There can be nothing more nightmarish for a woman than learning about that she can never conceive. Becoming a mother is one of the most cherished wishes for every woman. Thankfully, there are a plethora of treatments available nowadays, which can help one to achieve the state of pregnancy and be blessed by a baby.
The most popular treatment till date is IVF. IVF is also better known as In Vitro Fertilization. Also touted as the most innovative procedure till date, this treatment involves fusing of the egg and sperm in a supervised environment outside the womb. The artificial embryo thus created is injected into the uterus of the woman. This is ensued by a conception process and thus, the much desired pregnancy. There are certain steps which need to be followed while one is adopting IVF treatment method. This method chiefly involves three steps. They are:
- Ovulation injections: this process is better known as ovulation induction. The female parent is prescribed certain drugs and injections which can induce production of excessive ovaries.
- Fallopian tube surgery: most of the women also resort to operating their fallopian tubes, which might be the main culprit for their infertility.
- The last resort for producing an egg is via egg donation. Most of the couples who have experienced constant ovarian failure treat egg donation as their last resort. In this process, the egg of some other female is used to fuse with the sperm of the male parent. The egg donor is usually anonymous. However there are several precautions which need to be observed before an egg can be accepted for mating. These include personal matching with the donor, social evaluation, legal bindings and psychological testing.
Once the couple has safely managed to procure an egg via any of the three methods mentioned above, they can begin with their treatment. IVF treatment seems to be appealing to women and men from all over the world. However there is a certain set of patients who should not consider opting for this treatment. These include aging ladies, men with a significantly lower sperm count or women with a damaged uterus.
Once the couple for IVF is carefully selected, the treatment can be commenced. There are various stages of IVF treatment such as:
o Super ovulation where the ovaries are induced to produce a large number of eggs
o Egg retrieval i.e. carefully selecting one egg out of the lot
o Embryo culture
o Embryo transfer i.e. placing the egg in woman’s uterus hoping it might be accepted by the body thus leading to further impregnation.
Although IVF treatment is by far the most widely used method in infertility treatment, it is also true that a couple generally requires three to four attempts at IVF before they can actually succeed. IVF is a long procedure where patience and luck play a very important role along with scientific development for the couple.
Infertility is not such a rare problem anymore. Of course there were infertility problems before but they never used to come to the forefront due to peoples lack of trust in medicine. With increased levels of stress and lack of time dedicated towards one’s own body, a lot of us face the problem of infertility. Do you want to have kids and are unable to conceive? The reason might be male infertility as well. Despite of infertility, you still can have hopes of becoming parents? You still can experience the joy of giving birth, the feeling of bringing to life a whole new person.
You can sense the feel of being a mother without many hassles. Or simply put do you want to be a mother? There are lots of people who have infertility problems. To every problem there is a solution so do not worry and consult your doctor for the possible alternative. IVF is basically an aided reproduction technique, in which fertilization takes place in vitro (in glass). The man’s sperm and the woman’s egg are joint in a laboratory plate, and after fertilization, the consequential embryo is then put into the woman’s uterus. IVF is a treatment alternative for couples with a certain type of infertility, and doctor executes the process in a laboratory so as to check the causes for the same.
In vitro fertilization is a very well known procedure for the cure of fertility. There could be plenty of reasons for infertility. A woman might not be able to carry a full length pregnancy or she might have a miscarriage in the middle of her pregnancy. Or it could be the biological inability to conceive. As opposed to the normal belief that only women are infertile, this problem could affect men as well. IVF is a very complex procedure and it is not recommended unless one has tried all kinds of treatments to conceive naturally. However after all your efforts to conceive fail for over a year, you can go in for IVF treatment. Here are a few things you should know before you start pursuing it.
There is an eligibility criterion for patients in IVF treatment. Woman who are very old and whose ovaries are falling should not try IVF treatments also men whose sperm count is lower than three million motile sperm should not opt for it. Although there is no age limit as such yet, woman with a damaged uterus must not consider the treatment. The five basic steps in an IVF treatment cycle are super ovulation (stimulating the development of more than one egg in a cycle), egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture, and embryo transfer.
One thing to remember is never to trust the clinic 100%. It doesn’t hurt to take a second and third opinion. In fact it could end up costing you less than the complications you would face had you blindly trusted some clinic. There is a lot of fake scams going on so one should be aware of all this and act wisely.
Step by Step Procedure of IVF Treatment
Step 1– Before the scheduling of IVF treatment, females are usually put on birth control pills. These pills are recommended because they reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and also improve the rates of success.
Step 2– The IVF treatment cycle begins the day you start getting your periods. On the subsequent day, your doctor will arrange a blood test and ultrasound for you. While blood test is done to examine estrogen levels and make sure that your ovaries are inactive, ultrasound will determine the your ovary size and detect ovarian cysts if any. If there is a cyst, your doctor will postpone the procedure for the next few days or can suck it with the help of a needle alternatively.
Step 3– After your blood test and ultrasound results are found normal, ovarian stimulation via fertility drugs is the next step. You may require to take 1 to 4 injections per day for around a week depending upon your treatment procedure. The commonly prescribed fertility drugs are cleaned, Femera, Follistim and Lupron. Through Ovarian stimulation, your doctor estimates whether the medication dosage should be increased or not.
Step 4– Fourth step of IVF is activating the oocytes for leading them to the final maturation stage for egg retrieval. It is very important to estimate the right time of giving the trigger shot and daily ultrasounds help at this point. The human chorionic gonadotropin injection is given when more than 4 follicles grow up to a length of a minimum 18 mm.
Step 5– After 3 days of receiving the hCG injection, your egg is being retrieved. Before the retrieval process, a light soporific is given to you to make you sleep. After the medication shows its effect, a transvaginal ultrasound will be conducted wherein a needle will be inserted via the back side of your vagina leading up to the ovaries. The needle is used to aspirate fluid and Ooctye from the follicle which are later relocated for fertilization in the embryology lab.
Step 6– After the Oocytes are being retrieved, the embryologist will examine them. Over maturation of eggs is not good for the fertilization process. However if the eggs have not matured accurately, they might be stimulated to maturity in the lab.
Step 7– Post 5 days of the retrieval, the fertilized eggs are transmitted to the female uterus via catheter. The embryos are transferred along with some fluid. After the transfer procedure ends, you are kept in bed for the few hours following which allowed to go home.
Step 8– After two weeks of the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is being conducted and if the result is positive, your doctor will put you on progesterone supplements for a few more weeks.
