Anesthesiologists are physicians who are responsible for focusing on surgical patients and pain relief. They are trained medicals doctors who administer anesthesia and monitor the patient’s condition before, during, and after the surgery. Anesthesia helps patients undergo surgery and other procedures without feeling any stress and pain that they would otherwise experience without it. Like any other physicians, anesthesiologists must successfully complete a four year undergraduate degree and another four years of medical school program. Subsequently, they have to go through an internship for four years of specialized training.
Anesthesia can be traced back to the discovery of using nitrous oxide (otherwise known as laughing gas) more than a hundred years ago. Inhaling this chemical compound produces a state of intoxication that makes people insensitive to pain. It was in 1842 that Dr. Crawford Long of Georgia first used ether to perform the first painless surgery. However, official credit for the use of ether as an anesthesia was credited to William Morton in 1846 during an operation. Subsequently, major developments in the field of anesthesiology occurred, especially after World War II. Nowadays, there are different drugs used as anesthesia, and these include thiopentone sodium, which is commonly used to induce sleep, nitrous oxide, halothane, enflurane, methoxyflurane, and cyclopropane, among many others.
Anesthesiologists, similar to other physicians, evaluate patients’ conditions in order to determine the best way to treat them. They do this by checking and reading patients’ medical charts to look for allergies and read their doctor’s and specialists’ comments. Anesthesiologists also take on the job of meeting with patients, examining them, discussing possible risks, listening to patients’ concerns, and answering their questions. They talk with other members of the medical team to discuss and decide which methods and medicines to use before, during and after surgeries or procedures.
The anesthesia is applied by the anesthesiologist during the first phase. Next, during the middle phase of the procedure, the anesthesiologist is responsible for monitoring the patient’s vital life functions such as the heart rate and rhythm, body temperature, blood pressure, brain, and kidney functions, and breathing by using sophisticated electronic equipment. Throughout the procedure and especially at the last phase, the anesthesiologist has to adjust the patient’s anesthesia to counteract the changes happening in his or her body.
However, an anesthesiologist’s responsibility to the patient does not end with the procedure. During the recovery phase he or she must administer medications for the patient to reverse the effects of the drugs used as anesthetic. The anesthesiologist will have to continue monitoring the patient’s vital signs in the recovery room with the help of nurses. He or she eventually decides whether a patient is fit to leave the recovery room.
